For readers of Tayari Jones, Brit Bennett, and Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ — A powerful, emotionally resonant novel set between Lagos and Eastern Nigeria, exploring love, family, and the radical desire to remain child-free in a patriarchal world.
When Karen’s mother dies suddenly, the independent life she has built in Lagos begins to unravel. Returning home forces her to confront the family she fled—and the secrets she has kept even from herself.
Written in haunting, lyrical prose, Your Tomorrow Was Today follows Karen as she navigates grief, autonomy, and the cultural expectations that threaten to swallow her whole.
As old resentments resurface, Karen faces a crisis she can no longer outrun: she is pregnant, carrying a life she never imagined, entangled in an affair with a younger colleague, and her estranged sister Omo is gravely ill. Every choice she makes pulls her between duty and the fierce longing to define her own life.
In the midst of this turmoil, Karen finds unexpected refuge in The Women’s Group—a circle of bold, unflinching women who challenge her to reconsider what love, forgiveness, and freedom truly demand.
Your Tomorrow Was Today is a poignant feminist reckoning that unfolds through identity, memory, and the choices that shape us.

Praise
“Dosunmu’s writing paints a raw and honest picture of the struggles of a modern woman navigating a patriarchal society. The novel beautifully contrasts the modernity of Lagos with antiquated societal norms, a theme that is especially poignant in a world where women’s autonomy is increasingly under threat. This novel will resonate with lovers of contemporary fiction and anyone tired of allowing others to define who and what they should be.”
Booklist Online
“Oyindamola Dosunmu weaves an emotionally complex and intellectually rich narrative… The novel is not a traditional narrative in the usual sense—there is no straightforward plot to follow. Instead, it functions as a layered, stream-of-consciousness meditation on what it means to live through trauma, cultural dislocation, and the passage of time… A novel that challenges conventional form and dares to ask difficult questions about memory, motherhood, and what it means to survive yourself.”
San Francisco Book Review
“Set against the shimmering backdrop of contemporary Nigeria, Your Tomorrow Was Today is a fascinating exploration of autonomy, family, and what it truly means to heal in a society that deems women selfish for doing so. A love letter to women courageous enough to be ‘selfish’ anyway.”
Reader Views (5 stars)

Readers’ Favorite (5 stars)
“Your Tomorrow Was Today is guaranteed to be a book that will touch you regardless of gender, interests, or philosophy. Written with rare emotional precision, it is destined to be one of the most talked about books of 2026.”
Littafi Review
“Dosunmu writes with grace and depth, crafting a narrative that speaks to the heart of African feminist literature. Her characters are as layered as the themes they embody—autonomy, shame, survival, healing. Karen’s journey is not one of easy redemption but of hard-won clarity, reminding readers that writing your future often begins with confronting your past.
For fans of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Ayobami Adebayo, Your Tomorrow Was Today is a must-read—literary fiction that dares to ask big questions while remaining deeply personal and emotionally alive.
An unforgettable debut—bold, moving, and necessary.”
Jeyran Main, Review Tales
“The author does not hand over a happy ending. What she so brilliantly does is allow the character(s) to work through the rage and choose herself in the end.”
